Species: Smooth newt (common)

The smooth or common newt is the most frequently occurring newt in the Netherlands. During the breeding season they can be found in ponds and lakes and the male can be identified by a crest that develops along his back. During the rest of the year these newts live on land.

More information about the smooth (common) newt can be found (in Dutch) on the Dutch amphibian, reptile and fish research organisation, RAVON.
